    August 16: Fight between two international insurance groups could dethrone Intact as Canada’s largest p&c insurer
        If a bid by UK-based RSA for certain assets of Aviva, currently standing at the equivalent of $8.2bn cash (all dollar figures the Canadian equivalent of pounds sterling) is successful, it would dethrone Intact as Canada’s largest p&c insurer.
        Industry veteran John McArthur, of Amac Consultants, said this would be the effect of combining the gross written premiums of $3.2bn of Aviva’s general insurance businesses here and RSA Canada’s $1.8bn for a total of around $5bn.

    August 5: Hailstones the size of baseballs in Saskatchewan: wildfires cover 500 sq.km. in BC interior
        Saskatchewan Government Insurance is still fielding auto and property claims from a storm last week that pummelled Carlyle, Sask., with hailstones the size of baseballs.
        Media relations manager Tony Playter said it has received about 100 property and 600 auto claims worth a total of just under $4m so far from the town in the southeastern corner of the province.

        July witnessed some of the worst flood events in history says global broker Aon Benfield’s latest Monthly Cat Recap report.
        Published by the company’s Impact Forecasting team, which evaluates global perils for the re/insurance industry, it said Asia was particularly affected by the deluge.

    August 3: New system developed by Ontario government and IBC will confirm if insurance valid when licence plates renewed
        Starting in November a new electronic verification system developed by the province and the Insurance Bureau of Canada will make it more difficult for people to drive without insurance, said provincial Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne.
        The system provides on-the-spot confirmation of valid insurance coverage during the licence plate renewal process.
