Saskatchewan creates restricted agents licence
(Copyright Thompson’s World Insurance News Not to be redistributed by individual recipients.) Using Alberta’s rules as a guide, Saskatchewan has introduced legislation creating a new restricted form of insurance licence. Effective Sept. 1 various businesses may apply to be licensed as restricted insurance agents, authorized to sell incidental insurance geared to their primary products or services. A ‘specification’ of the Superintendent of Insurance lists the eligible businesses: dealers in autos, boating equipment, recreational vehicles, farm implements and construction equipment, along with travel agencies, transportation companies, deposit-taking institutions and mortgage brokers. Vehicle dealers will be permitted to insure equipment warranties, creditor’s disability, creditor’s life and creditor’s loss of employment. Travel agency operators may apply to sell travel insurance, customs brokers or freight forwarders may sell cargo insurance, and so on. While crediting Alberta’s rules as the template, Deputy Superintendent Elaine Thompson told Thompson’s Saskatchewan has introduced several new features. One is an option for a licensee’s agent to be licensed as well. “If I’m a travel agent and I want to use another company to sell my travel insurance for me under my licence, they are eligible to apply for a separate licence to do this sale,” she said.
