It could be a long time before the New Brunswick government decides on the use of credit scoring for residential property insurance, a Finance Ministry official said.
Marc Belliveau was commenting on submissions on a discussion paper seeking feedback on the issue which the superintendent is now beginning to evaluate.
“There were between 15 and 18 submissions from what I understand — most from insurance companies.”
He said those submissions will be evaluated and then advice will be given to the minister in accordance with the feedback.
As for when any decision will be made, he said it could be a long process.
“The house doesn’t need to be sitting for any changes as they can be made by regulation.
“But it is difficult to predict how long the entire process of making suggestions and changing regulations will take.”
Many of the submissions were sent in confidence as some contain business information. So they probably won’t be made public.
While the government believes that the use of credit history, credit rating, credit score or credit-based insurance score for rating purposes for residential property should be prohibited it is prepared to review proposals from industry on rating mechanisms that provide consumers with true discounts.
