  • Guidelines for G20 Summit claims released

The Federal government says business owners and their insurers are mostly on the hook for any damages that may be incurred during the upcoming G20 Summit in Toronto June 25 – 27.
It says one-time payments on a voluntary basis may be made to those who experience financial loss and who submit reasonable, justifiable and substantiated claims.
But the eligibility requirements for those claims are pretty tight.
Those eligible to submit a claim and able to obtain payments include commercial businesses and non-profit organizations located inside the security perimeter in the external affected areas and at satellite event locations who suffer loss of profits or revenues due to extraordinary security measures..
So can individuals located or residing inside the same areas who incur extraordinary costs
Claims which are not eligible for payment under the guidelines include those for damage caused by third parties, including vandalism, personal injury emotional distress.
The government says vandalism is already covered by regular insurance and payments are not provided for losses that are insurable under normal insurance coverage.
Meanwhile, insurers in the region have been busy preparing both staff and customers for the implications of the security measures for the Summit. They are facing employee and customer risks, property risks and financial risks.
RSA risk reinsurance and underwriting vp Mike Wallace told Thompson’s it is reminding companies located in the downtown core to take necessary precautions to protect themselves against possible disruptions and building damage.
