    • Tornado gives insurers chance to show value

        A severe weather event earlier this month in and around the ‘tomato capital of Canada’ could leave insurers with a saucy bill in the tens of millions.
        But as the former ceo of the Insurance Bureau of Canada points out, it has also presented the industry with an opportunity to show how it shines.
        “It looks like the industry jumped on this pretty quick,” said Stan Griffin, who hails from the southwestern Ontario town of Leamington, where a tornado hit was confirmed on June 5.
        “I did a tour of the area and a lot of the people we talked to said that by Sunday they had already been contacted by their insurers, brokers or claims people.”
        It was a perfect opportunity to mobilize the bureau’s Community Assistance Mobile Pavilion, known as ‘CAMP.’
        “It shows that the industry will be ready and the bureau will be ready for the next event it’s needed at.” He said that while it was too early to estimate, he wouldn’t be surprised if the industry losses may mount into the tens of millions from the event.
        RSA has sent its Emergency Claims Response Vehicle to Leamington, assisting customers and offering advice. Members of RSA’s claims team arrived in Leamington Sunday evening in the vehicle, which is literally a mobile claims office, to help respond to the damages.
