Guidelines released for new auto regime
(Copyright Thompson’s World Insurance News Not to be redistributed by individual recipients.) The guidelines for the treatment of minor injuries that are key to auto insurance reforms in Ontario have been released by the provincial regulator. They include updated definitions, detailed treatment parameters and fee schedules for dealing with impairments that are considered minor when the reforms take effect Sept. 1. The Financial Services Commission of Ontario says the guidelines — which were developed with input from the insurance industry, health care professionals and legal representatives — focus on the application of a ‘functional restoration approach.’ This refers to the delivery of ‘interventions’ by health practitioners that help injured insureds reduce or manage pain and associated psycho-social symptoms to help them function at a pre-accident level at work and at home. One of the objectives of the guidelines is to speed access to rehabilitation for accident victims with minor injuries. They are also aimed at improving the use of health care resources and providing certainty around cost and payment for insurers. FSCO says the guidelines should also help provide immediate access to treatment without insurer approval for people with minor injuries. More in our June 21 2010 edition
