  • Regulators look at MGAs and adjusters
(Copyright Thompson’s World Insurance News) Regulation of managing general agencies, wholesalers and adjusters is among items up for review by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.
In its latest statement of priorities, released in late June, FSCO said it will be working with the Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators and Canadian Insurance Services Regulatory Organizations to identify and address risks to consumers, regulatory gaps and legislative and regulatory barriers with those commercial entities.
FSCO says it will also be working with the CCIR and CISRO to review and examine the issues and options around the use of credit scoring models in underwriting and other ways insurers use data from credit rating agencies.
And it will work with the Canadian Automobile Insurance Rate Regulators to finalize implementation of harmonized rate profiles in filings submitted by insurers.
These initiatives are part of one of FSCO’s key focus areas for 2010 - 2011 — which is fostering a co-ordinated national approach to regulatory issues.
Other key focus areas are supporting the province’s auto insurance reform, modernizing its pension system, enhancing consumer protection in the mortgage brokering industry and improving the delivery of the commission’s services.
On auto insurance, FSCO noted it will be closely monitoring the Sept. 1 reforms post implementation — in particular the effectiveness of the minor injury cap — and will be making recommendations to maintain rate stability.
