  • July 29: Language problems when you have an auto claim in B.C.? You can talk to insurer in 170 plus languages
        (Copyright Thompson’s World Insurance News)
Get in an auto accident in B.C. and don’t speak English too well when making a claim?
Whether you normally speak one of the other major languages in the world or such lesser known ones as Hmong, Gujarati, Acholi, Wolof, Toishanese, Dinka, Chaochow or more than 165 others, ICBC has a translator at hand for you 24/7, 365 days a year.
It is done by the insurer using Language Line Services.
The demand, over-the-telephone translation service hat was piloted this year in nine Lower Mainland claim centres and earlier through ICBC’s Dial-a-Claim service.
The success of this trial period has resulted in a plan to roll this service out to all ICBC claim centres across the province, the corporation said in a release.
Claims vp Craig Horton said it will reduce the anxiety some of its customers may feel by creating an environment for them to ask questions and resolve any issues in their own primary language.
“The successful handling of any claim depends on open and clear communication.”
All Language Line Services interpreters supporting ICBC and its customers are trained in the use of insurance terminology.
On average, it will only take seconds to be connected to an interpreter and the service will operate 24-7, 365 days per year.
“We know that B.C. is a culturally diverse province but no matter what language you speak, we speak it too” Mr. Horton said.
A list of the translations offered by the service is at: http://www.icbc.com/claims/How-claim/claim-translation.pdf.
