B.C. reviewing no-fault auto provisions

June 4, 2026 — A special all-party committee of the B.C. legislature is seeking public comment on accident-related benefits and limits on legal actions under the province’s no-fault auto insurance model.

It is reviewing parts 10 and 11 of the province’s Insurance Act which established the current ‘Enhanced Care’ system in 2020.

Part 10 outlines accident-related benefits, including income replacements, permanent impairment compensation and health care and rehabilitation service coverage.

It also restricts the ability to initiate injury claims.

Part 11 establishes the framework for basic vehicle damage coverage and includes corresponding limits on legal actions related to vehicle damage.

The special committee is also seeking input on Bill M-237, the Insurance (Vehicle) Amendment Act, which proposes changes related to the time period to make a claim for benefits for a catastrophic injury and also a change to the meaning of a catastrophic injury.

The deadline for participating in the consultation is June 25.

The committee will review the submissions and invite presentations in the fall.

It has until Feb. 18, 2027, to complete its work.

Stephanie Higginson (NDP, Ladysmith- Oceanside) is chair of the committee and Brennan Day (Conservative, Courtenay- Comox) is deputy chair.
