June 4, 2026 — Manitoba Public Insurance has released its first Indigenous action plan, outlining actions the Crown auto insurer will take from 2026 to 2031 to improve access to services, increase Indigenous representation and support reconciliation.
MPI also released a statement of commitment to truth and reconciliation, following engagement with Indigenous communities, employees, partners and customers.
The action plan is organized around three pillars: internal structures, community impact and cultural empowerment.
It includes nine priority areas, including leadership and governance, cultural competency training, employment and representation, access to insurance, licensing and identification services, community engagement, data and accountability, road safety, trauma-informed support and Indigenous procurement.
Satvir Jatana, MPI’s president and CEO, said the plan reflects input gathered through engagement with Indigenous communities across Manitoba.
“Through our statement of commitment and Indigenous action plan, we are committed to building respectful partnerships, creating culturally safer spaces, and ensuring Indigenous voices continue to guide this work,” she said.
In the first year, MPI said expected actions include expanding road safety and community engagement initiatives, reviewing Indigenous employment and representation within the corporation, and improving licensing and identification services for remote communities.
MPI will look at mobile testing services for remote and northern communities, implement mobile ID clinics in partnership with local communities and organizations and offer materials in various Indigenous languages at service centres.
The insurer said it will also develop Indigenous-focused road safety campaigns and education materials, expand pedestrian safety kit pilots to more Indigenous communities and provide culturally safer, trauma-informed support for Indigenous clients navigating claims.
